Myrtle Beach based airline Direct Air announced Tuesday that it has suspended all flights until May 15th. “The decision was made to address operational matters. We are currently
evaluating strategic alternatives for Direct Air...Direct Air is committed to our passengers, employees, and the communities we serve.” according to a
statement posted Tuesday on the company’s website, Direct Air. This statement was issued a day after all flights were halted because of unpaid fuel bills. Two of the carriers that fly planes for Direct Air filed notices
with the U.S. Department of Transportation that they would stop all
Direct Air flights because bills haven’t been paid, DOT spokesman Bill
Mosley said. “They said they notified the operator, Direct
Air, that they would cancel all future flights effective immediately...They cited non-payment.”
Mosley said. Direct Air marketing officer Ed Warneck blamed the suspended flights on
skyrocketing fuel costs. "Direct Air missed a fuel bill, which led to not
being able to fuel up the planes." Warneck said. He said “It’s temporary,” he said of the suspended flights. “We will have this fixed.”
Direct Air began service in 2007, focusing on providing
non-stop flights between secondary airports, and offering vacation packages
along with the flights. It offers nonstop flights to Myrtle Beach, SC from: Columbus, OH, New York, NY via Newark, NJ, Toronto, ON/Buffalo, NY via Niagara Falls, NY, Pittsburgh, PA, Montreal, QC via Plattsburgh, NY, Boston via Worcester, MA and Springfield/Central, MI.
So what is Direct Air doing to help the thousands of customers stranded? Direct
Air instructed passengers holding tickets on the canceled flights to get in
touch with their credit card companies for refunds. The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce said it is trying to help
Direct Air passengers who are in Myrtle Beach aiming to get back home or
those who were scheduled to fly to the Grand Strand by providing
contact information to local travel agents. Brad Dean,
president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, offered
the following comments in response to a suspension of Direct Air
flights Click Here. Other airlines at MYR including Delta, US Airways
and Spirit have been successful at getting passengers
re-booked onto other flights.
